CEBU CITY -- Cebuano fantasy geeks rejoice! The fandom is alive and well in the Queen of the South, thanks to The Thray, a medieval-themed restaurant for fans of Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones, Dungeons & Dragons, and similar pieces of lore.
The restaurant’s owners are huge fans of fantasy. Adventure and fantasy games also had an influence on the theme and menu.
“We thought about making the small space turn into some kind of a dungeon, thanks to Tales from the Crypt, and would like to execute an ambience that makes you feel like you’re in a different realm or a place like in the Prancing Pony from 'Lord of the Rings,'” owner Angelique Palo said in an e-mail interview.
Entering Thray is really like going into a castle keep from fantasy epics. Light seeps in through the windows and “candles” burn around the wooden tables and benches.
There are some touches of humor as the toilet is called the Throne room. Mercifully, the owners still use a porcelain throne in lieu of an iron one. One would expect a grey-robed wizard guarding the kitchen whose door has a huge “You Shall Not Pass!” sticker on it. Wooden plates and tankards complete the medieval experience.
Steaks and grilled meats make up most of the Thray’s menu. The entrees adhere to the medieval theme by being named after classes like the Knight, the Warlock, the Squire, among others.
Offering boodles is a clever use of the benches and tables as the furniture is really fit for a communal feast. For gatherings, The Thray offers special meals that tie in with the event’s theme.
The Thray has its share of geeky visitors including gamers and die-hard fantasy fans. The restaurant sometimes hosts geeky get-togethers such as a weekly screening of "Game of Thrones" episodes complete with a post-show trivia contest. There is nothing like a communal cheer of a geeky crowd during the shows many plot twists.
If you’re a geek of any fandom, The Thray is a tavern that’s worth a visit when you’re in Cebu. You get affordable and hearty food. If you time it right, you can find kindred spirits geeking out over the comics, games, films, and TV series led by the Thray’s own meister.
The Thray is located at Grove Building, 2211 V. Rama Ave., Guadalupe, Cebu City, and is open Tuesdays to Sundays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
