MANILA -- It's not everyday that we, Filipinos, get to see a kababayan, not a white man, put on a colorful costume in comics.
So the hype surrounding Wave, a woman from Cebu who is part of the roster of Asian superheroes Marvel Comics is introducing in May as it continues to diversify its offerings, is certainly justified.
One testament to this bubbling excitement is the discussion among fans on who should portray Wave, should a live-action series or a movie be made featuring her.
The vote of Leinil Yu, the Filipino artist who co-created Wave, went to "General's Daughter" star Angel Locsin, but there are some who think that Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach and Nadine Lustre could pull it off as well.
It's not that hard to imagine any of these women wielding Wave's glowing weapons, but as it turns out, those rooting for Lustre don't even have to, thanks to a variant cover for the comic.
The upcoming issue for "War of the Realms: New Agents of Atlas," where Wave is set to make her first appearance in, is set to be released this May and it will come with a unique cover.
Drawn by Pinoy artists Mico Suayan and Rain Beredo, the variant cover features Wave emerging from underneath the sea, all smiles as she displays her neon-lit, water-based tech, with a Philippine flag serving as the backdrop.
Suayan explained on his Facebook account that he based his drawing on Lustre.
The variant cover will be available exclusively through local comic book store Comic Odyssey, which announced that it will be sharing more details on how to order soon.
A variant cover is basically another printing of a comic, but features different cover art. The print run for these is often limited, and sometimes it even costs more.
