MANILA, Philippines -- (UPDATE) Local sportswear brand LGR on Thursday announced that it will be helping in the fight against COVID-19 by making personal protective equipment (PPEs) for frontliners.

"We pay tribute to our frontliners for their effort and sacrifice," LGR Sportswear said on its social media accounts.

"As LGR Sportswear's way of showing its gratitude, we will be working double time to produce more PPEs to our frontliners. It's the company's way to help in the fight against COVID-19."

In the Instagram post, LGR's Rhayan Cruz showed the waterproof, washable material that they will use in producing the PPEs.

"Ready ang materials, kasi nagsu-supply ako for SM. Ready na ako sa fabrics," Cruz told ABS-CBN News. "So 'yung tela na 'yun is water-repellant talaga na fabric."

As for the design, Cruz based it on a coverall provided by a friend who is a doctor at the Philippine General Hospital. He said it was similar to what was used in Wuhan, China, where the disease was first recorded.

"'Yung overall na pinadala sa akin, 'yung exact specifications noon, 'yun ang ginawa ko," he explained. "Hindi ko ito sinundan sa internet or hinulaan."

LGR Sportswear will first provide PPEs to the Philippine General Hospital and the Taguig-Pateros District Hospital, but hopes to expand to the entire country as well.

To meet the demand, Cruz said a skeleton workforce of 50 people will start production by Friday. They had stopped production when the community lockdown was imposed, but his employees were very willing to work and help.

"Noong kinausap ko ang mga tao ko yesterday, nagpa-meeting ako, lahat sila, 'Sir, willing akong tumulong'," he said.

"'Pag nanonood ka ng news, 'yung first week ng lockdown, lahat ng hinahanap ng tao, food lang," he added. "After ng second week natin, ang hinahanap na ng tao is protection sa hospital, kasi sobrang daming affected na doctors."

"Hindi ko ito nakikita na sacrifice. Kailangan natin tumulong," he stressed.

The company accepts donations to help in producing the reusable PPEs.

Founded in 1988, LGR Sportswear provides uniforms for several PBA teams, the Philippine national volleyball teams, and the Philippine national football teams, among others.
