MANILA – Beauty-queen maker Jonas Gaffud surprised netizens when he announced his departure from beauty camp Aces and Queens on Monday after leading it for 18 years.

On Facebook, Gaffud said that as much as he would love to continue training aspiring beauty queens through Aces and Queens, he believes it is time for him to leave the group to pursue other endeavors.

“I will focus on developing and sustaining advocacies which are close to our hearts: education of children, and raising funds for their causes, LGBTQIA rights & awareness, tourism for the Philippines and women empowerment,” he said.

Gaffud then went on to thank those that he has worked with or have supported his cause during his stint with the group.

“I thank Aces and Queens, all the girls we have trained since 2001, everyone who has trusted me and above all, Filipino pageant lovers and supporters, without which we would not have achieved our successes in international pageantry,” he said.

“Huge thanks to all camps, mentors, teams, groups, glam teams, designers for making the beauty pageant industry alive. I salute how the camps brought out the best in the Filipina. No one can take that away from them - their hardwork and dedication,” he added.

He likewise expressed his gratitude to Binibining Pilipinas and the Miss Universe Organization.

Lastly, Gaffud appealed to everyone to continuously support Filipino beauty queens for “we are Team Philippines after all.”

Gaffud, who is fondly called "Mama J" by his mentees, has trained many beauty queens during his time with Aces and Queens, including Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach.
