NEGROS OCCIDENTAL -- The son of a truck driver has graduated summa cum laude from STI-West Negros University.
Twenty-year-old Deo Lumogdang from Barangay Tabugon in Kabankalan City, Negros Occidental topped the nearly 1,000 graduates of STI-WNU.
Lumogdang said he took up BS Education, major in English, because teaching was his passion. A consistent honor student from elementary to high school, he was also an academic and city scholar.
He achieved much despite his humble roots. His father works as a truck driver for sugar planters, and has had to work hard to provide for the needs of Deo and his two other siblings.
His 44-year-old mother Elenor told ABS-CBN that despite being poor, they made sure to send their children to school.
Deo said as a boy who grew up in the upland barangay of Kabankalan City, he was used to working hard and living a simple life.
He credits his academic success to focus and discipline.
"When it is time to study, I do not engage in social media, I do not watch TV. I have to focus and I have to discipline myself because I have to give back to my parents after I finish college. They have been sacrificing so much for me," Deo said.
Right after graduation Deo was offered to teach senior high school by his alma mater. They will also sponsor his masteral and doctoral studies.
