Screen veteran Coney Reyes was a proud mother to Vico Sotto, as the young mayor of Pasig City became a trending topic on social media over his office's proactive measures amid the coronavirus crisis.
On Instagram, Reyes shared a video of Sotto that went viral on Thursday. It shows the mayor undergoing disinfection at what appears to be the lobby of a building, before he takes out his own handy alcohol bottle and sprays it, in jest, on the hygiene personnel.
"Someone sent me this short video clip of my son," Reyes wrote. "I thank God for his sense of humor (which I'm sure he got from his Papa) amidst all that we are experiencing as a people... as a nation."
Vico is Reyes' child with comedy icon Vic Sotto.
Addressing the local government of Pasig, Reyes said: "Thank you so much to all the men and women who tirelessly work alongside Vico! Bilib ako sa inyo! Maraming salamat sa walang patid na tulong at suporta! God is your ultimate rewarder!"
In the last few days, Pasig City has earned praise on social media as images and reports of its measures to mitigate the spread of coronavirus and alleviate the impact of the quarantine on vulnerable sectors.
The hashtags #ProtectVico and #Vivico (a play on Sotto's name and "baby ko") also became trends, as controversial blogger Mocha Uson shared a message critical of the mayor's steps.
Reyes did not refer specifically to the social media stir surrounding her son, but did thank "all the people who continue to pray for Vico and his team!"
"God bless us all and keep us in His loving care. God is our refuge and strength! Our ever-present help in times of need! Mga kapwa Filipino! Stay strong! Konti nalang ito, di ba Lord?!"
