MANILA -- Tourist-favorite Baguio City canceled on Monday activities for the ongoing Panagbenga Flower Festival as it guarded against the spread of the new coronavirus (COVID-19).

Baguio Mayor Benjamin Magalong is "completely canceling" events of the festival following an interagency meeting on the local and domestic situation regarding COVID-19.

The Cordillera Administrative Region Athletic Association (CARAA) Meet is also suspended.

Other crowd-drawing activities in Baguio City such as the night market and pedestrianization of Session Road are also suspended.

The development came after President Rodrigo Duterte placed the country under a state of public health emergency to arrest the spread of the pathogen that has killed 3,500 and infected 109,000 people worldwide.

The Philippines so far confirmed 10 cases of COVID-19, including an incident of local transmission.
