DAVAO CITY -- It seems like a playground, but it is also where children with special needs can learn the basic and daily activities and develop their skills.

This is the new occupational therapy clinic in town that opened Wednesday afternoon in Davao City.

Through a teaching-playing environment, the center helps children with special needs.

"Activities of daily living, pagligo, pagbibihis pagkain ... caring for others, caring for pets ... then social participation, paano sila mag interact sa mga tao. Kasi especially yung may special needs, takot sila, anxious na humarap sa mga tao," occupational therapist Sarah Jaladra said.

There are a number of therapy clinics in the city but Councilor Dr. Joselle Villafuerte said that the facilities for these children are insufficient to cater to them all.

This is why the government is pushing for a special needs intervention center.

The proposed project is in the pipeline.

“Southern Philippines Medical Center is also planning, if the private sector, national government, and [local government unit] will work together, I think marami tayong matutulungan," Villafuerte said.
