MANILA – If you’re a Filipino who just watched “Black Panther” and noticed something familiar, your hunch is right.

The red and gold costumes of the Dora Milaje – the team of women who serve as special forces in the movie – were partly inspired by Filipino artifacts.

This was confirmed by Anthony Francisco, one of Marvel’s senior visual development illustrators, in an interview with Buzzfeed published over the weekend.

The article noted that Francisco, who grew up in the Philippines, had a lot of Filipino tribal décor in their house.

The Dora Milaje costume also drew inspiration from designs from African artifacts, samurai armor, ninja shoes, and friendship bracelets.

Aside from Francisco and the rest of Marvel’s in-house visual development team, freelance artists also helped design the look of Dora Milaje.

Francisco’s designs can also be seen in two other popular characters: Baby Groot “Guardians of the Galaxy” and Loki in “Thor 3.”
