MANILA – Filipino celebrity makeup artist RB Chanco now has a new claim to fame after doing the makeup of no less than France’s Iris Mittenaere during the 65th Miss Universe pageant.

In an interview with ABS-CBN News’ Marie Lozano, Chanco shared that Mittenaere first sat on her makeup chair during the preliminary competition which is “one of the most important days of their lives as a contestant.”

Mittenaere liked how Chanco did her makeup for the preliminary competition that she chose her again for coronation day.

“Umupo lang siya silently. Nagulat lang ako, siyempre I got shocked. Sabi niya, ‘Hi RB, I follow you on Instagram and I think you’re the best.’ Doon ako napa-OMG totoo kaya ito? Titignan ko mamaya kung fina-follow niya talaga ako,” she said.

Chanco said she appreciated how Mittenaere gave her the freedom to do what she does best without dictating what she wants or doesn’t want.

“I super appreciated that. You will be more comfortable with that. Nung mine-makeupan ko siya, tahimik lang siya, hindi siya nagsasalita, nags-smile siya,” she said, adding that the French beauty queen was very patient and soft-spoken.

Aside from Mittenaere, Chanco also did the makeup of Philippines’ Maxine Medina, Colombia’s Andrea Tovar and the candidates from Venezuela, Argentina and Spain, among others.

“I was really pressured," Chanco confessed. "Kinabahan ako, na-guilty ako, nag-panic ako. But you have to have that composure na hindi ka nangangatog kasi ang mine-makeupan mo sa harapan mo baka maging next Miss Universe. Siyempre quality pa rin dapat.”

Hoping to uplift Filipino makeup artists, Chanco admitted she prayed hard for France to win when it was only her and Haiti’s Raquel Pelissier in the final two.

“Siyempre gusto mong manalo 'yung minakeupan mo because 'yung picture na mare-record, mavi-video, it will go viral. It will be seen all over the world, it will be the trademark of Miss France,” she said.

Turning emotional, Chanco said France’s victory also proved her bashers wrong.

“People are bashing me on social media. ‘Kamukha mo naman lahat ng minakeupan mo.’ I felt bad… Some of the comments kasi, ‘Wala na bang bago?’ Hindi nila naiintindihan 'yung hirap mag-makeup ng 12 to 15 candidates na kailangan pulidong pulido dahil mapapahiya 'yung kumpanya na nire-represent ko, 'yung Pilipinas,” she said.

“The fight of Miss France was also my fight. I was praying to God na kung hindi, it’s okay. It’s really okay. So nung nanalo talaga, tinaas
'yung pedestal. I proved everyone wrong,” Chanco added.

Chanco admitted she still gets overwhelmed whenever people now tag her as the “makeup artist to the universe.”

“Nakakataba ng puso. Hindi ko ine-expect. I’m just a pageant fanatic. You watch Miss Universe, you see their makeup and you comment about it. Now, when I watch the replay, I am teary eyed,” she said.

Chanco said her stint as a makeup artist of the Miss Universe candidates, with Mittenaere winning, is the “greatest glory in my career.”

On what she wants to achieve next, Chanco said: “I’m very content with this experience. It’s really one for the books, something I will share with my kids, with my apo and grand apos. [On what I want to achieve next], I think Hollywood, someone who is a famous Hollywood star, the likes of Angelina Jolie, Jennifer Lawrence, Beyonce.”
