A different kind of hope: Defining the Duterte victory

ABS-CBN News

MANILA - What differentiates the victory of presumptive president Rodrigo Duterte from that of President Benigno Aquino III in 2010?

According to ABS-CBN Customer Business Development head Vivian Tin, Aquino tapped into a different kind of hope when he won in the 2010 polls.

"I think the kind of hope that was in 2010 was different. It was a hope based on character. The 2016 the hope is based on performance. In that sense, Mayor Duterte, the longing for him to perform is very high because he did promise results. He didn't just stand on an equity that said democratic, God-fearing, clean," she said.

A rolling ballot count by an election commission-accredited watchdog on Tuesday showed Duterte had almost 39 percent of votes cast. He was more than 5 million votes ahead of his nearest rival with 90 percent of votes counted. With a report by Reuters
