Comelec optimistic on better OAV turnout

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) noted an improved voter turnout in this year's Overseas Absentee Voting (OAV) compared to 2013.

Chairman Andres Bautista said only 16% or 118,000 of the 737,000 registered voters participated in the last elections (in 2013), but this year's turnout appears to be higher.

"Sa Hong Kong at Singapore, lumampas na ng 1,000 yung dami nga botante; tapos sa Middle East, sa Kuwait, over 500; sa Bahrain 400 plus. Wala pang pumapasok sa Saudi Arabia, that's also big pero mukhang maganda ang simula ng ating OAV," he said.

He added that they will be happy with a 50% turnout rate.

Comelec is also looking forward to seeing the effect of the innovations they have introduced, like allowing voters to vote in person or via mail, and letting the consulates go to the location of the voters.
