Duterte would still win even if Poe or Roxas gave way: strategist

Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte would still emerge victorious even if either of Mar Roxas or Senator Grace Poe gave way, a strategist of the PDP-Laban standard bearer said Tuesday.

In an interview on ANC, Pompee La Viña, social media director of Duterte's presidential campaign, noted that pre-election surveys conducted by Pulse Asia showed that if Poe withdrew from the race, most of her votes would go to the mayor and not to Roxas.

He acknowledged that if Roxas was the one to withdraw, the Liberal Party (LP) standard bearer's votes would then go to Poe. He, however, stressed that the scenario was very unlikely as it was "obvious" that Roxas would not be the one to give way to the senator.

"If Senator Poe had moved over to Roxas, then the change agenda would have been ours alone," added La Viña. "And we would still have won."

According to Poe's campaign adviser, Tony La Viña, withdrawing from the race and instead tying up with another candidate just to thwart a Duterte presidency was outside of the question for the senator.

"We're not in here for an anti-Duterte thing. We're here for a positive message. Of course we were willing to talk to anyone... But if the premise of the talks was for her leaving or withdrawing for the sake of preventing Duterte, that's outside of the question," he said.

"It's not up to us to choose who the president of the Philippines is, it's up to the people. We're not gonna gang up on a candidate."
