Ex-defense chief denies jumping ship from Roxas to Duterte
MANILA - Former Defense Secretary Avelino "Nonong" Cruz on Saturday denied that he has jumped ship from the camp of Liberal Party (LP) standard bearer Mar Roxas to PDP-Laban candidate Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte.
In a statement, his law firm said Cruz continues to support the presidential bid of Roxas as well as the candidacy of his running mate, Camarines Sur Rep. Leni Robredo.
"[Cruz] denies switching to Duterte. He continues to fully support the candidacy of Roxas and Robredo," his law firm said.
It said the article published by The Manila Standard mistook Cruz for Ave Cruz of the San Beda College of Law.
Avelino Cruz is a graduate of the University of the Philippines (UP) College of Law and currently the president of the UP Law Foundation.
The Manila Standard reported that Cruz led a group of lawyers in declaring their support for the candidacy of Duterte after a review of the mayor's platform of governance.
"As lawyers, we are committed to the rule of law and justice for all. We believe that Mayor Duterte, a former prosecutor himself, will uphold the rule of law, despite apprehensions expressed by some sectors that the contemplated iron fist against crime and corruption under a Duterte administration, could lead to human rights abuses," the report quoted Cruz as saying. - Report from RG Cruz, ABS-CBN News
