BEIJING, China - A Chinese military fleet recently conducted long-distance island-landing and logistical support drills in the South China Sea, state television CCTV reported.

The South China Sea fleet was assisted by various supply ships for mainly fuel and artillery support, as it carried out various offensive and supply drills, CCTV reported.

CCTV also said that part of the drill consisted of rescue and maintenance operations.

According to CCTV, an amphibious panzer, hovercrafts and speed boats carried out a landing drill.

China's South China Sea claims have countered those of six neighbouring countries, setting off hostilities and waves of anti-Chinese demonstrations in the region, the largest of which was held in the Philippines last April.

The territorial disputes have resulted in further escalation of military build-ups and various military drills held within or near the disputed territories.
