Amir of Kuwait donates $10-M to typhoon victims

KUWAIT – The Amir of Kuwait has contributed $10 million for the thousands of victims affected by super typhoon Yolanda (international name: Haiyan) in the Philippines.

"We very happy when we heard from his Highness, the Amir, about the $10 million donation to the affected people in the Philippines and we are making plan with our boss Barges Al-Barges to send Inshaallah to the Philippines soon," said Yousef Al Merag, director of the Disaster Management & Emergency of the Kuwait Red Crescent Society.

The Amir of Kuwait, Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, also extended his sympathies to those who have been greatly affected by the typhoon.

The Red Crescent Society also met with Philippine Ambassador Lamberto Monsato to discuss other possible assistance that they could extend to typhoon victims.

"We are very pleased and happy that his Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah decided to donate to the Philippines for the typhoon victims in Central Philippines," Monsato said.

The Red Crescent Society also set up help desk to provide assistance to overseas Filipino workers who are anxious to look for relatives in the typhoon-hit areas the Visayas region.

"We have activated the Family Links Program and its working two shifts daily; morning from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. and in the afternoon from 5p.m. to 8 p.m.," said Coordinator Iman Haidar, Operations Center Disaster Management & Emergency of the Kuwait Red Crescent Society.

Haidar said they continue to cooperate with the Philippine embassy, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) delegation in Kuwait and the Philippine National Red Cross to fill up all the inquiries for the missing persons and families.

"We are welcoming and encouraging all the Filipino community in Kuwait to visit us in case they are trying to trace their missing family," said Haidar.

Filipinos in Kuwait may go to the Kuwait Red Crescent Society in Shuwaikh, just besides the Kuwait News Agency building, and fill out forms. The help desk is open all week long.
