CALGARY, Canada - A Filipino kid is vying for the title of “The Next Star” on YTV, a popular talent search in Canada.

Eleven year old Darren Espanto has made it to the top 6, but needs the help of kababayans to win the grand prize.

Espanto started singing at the age of two. His parents have been very supportive in honing his talents.

“When I was little, I would listen to some songs and I'd try to copy the tune to it,” said Espanto.

After watching past seasons of The Next Star on YTV, Espanto said he was ready to give it a try.

“S’yempre very proud. Sabi nila pinakabata tapos Pinoy na hindi mo akalain na mapapansin,” said his mother, Marinel.

Espanto is the youngest contestant on the show.

“We know na dream niya din ito. It’s his passion, ang pagkanta,” said his father Don.

Compared to other talent shows on television, The Next Star is different since there is no elimination for the top 6 finalists.

They simply perform each week and hopefully impress more viewers and the judges until the grand winner is announced by the end of September in Toronto.

“If I win, I would just continue my dreams,” the boy said.

Kababayans can help support Darren’s bid to be The Next Star by voting for him on the show’s website at
