MANILA -- The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) on Wednesday placed Thailand under Alert Level 1 (Precautionary Phase) after at least 22 people were killed and more than 100 were injured in a bombing near Erawan Shrine in Bangkok.
Filipinos are particularly advised to avoid the following areas, as specified by the Thai police:
Khao San road
Tuk Chai intersection
Soi Thong Lor
Alert Level 1 is issued when there are valid signs of internal disturbance, instability, and external threat in the host country. Filipinos are alerted to take necessary precautions.
The Erawan Shrine, which was crowded at the time of the blast, is a major tourist attraction in Thailand. Foreigners, including a Chinese, are among the fatalities.
The Philippine Embassy in Bangkok confirmed that a Filipina was among the injured in the deadly explosion.
Foreign Affairs spokesman Charles Jose said the Filipina, who requested to remain anonymous, sustained a hearing-related injury due to the blast.
Jose added that the Filipina is in Bangkok with a foreign family, and will return to her employer's country soon.
Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha called Monday's explosion at a busy intersection "the worst incident that has ever happened in Thailand." He promised to track down those responsible for said explosion.
The DFA said the Philippine Embassy in Bangkok is ready to extend assistance, if necessary, to the estimated 15,000 Filipinos in Thailand.
