MANILA, Philippines – The Philippines is welcoming the birth of South Sudan as a nation, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said today.
In a press statement, the DFA said the Philippines recognizes South Sudan as a sovereign country.
The Republic of South Sudan became the world’s newest country last July 9.
South Sudan won its independence from the north following a referendum in January that saw most of the population vote for independence.
"The Philippine government and the Filipino people share the aspirations of the people of South Sudan for self-determination and wish them happiness and prosperity," the DFA said.
The DFA also said that the Philippines hopes to establish diplomatic relations with the new country. -- With reports from Agence France-Presse
