MANILA, Philippines - A tourist bus carrying 64 Filipinos caught fire in Italy on July 18, leaving one person dead, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) reported Friday.

The DFA said that according to the Philippine Consulate-General in Milan, the tourist bus caught fire between the towns of Varazze and Celle Ligure.

The DFA said Procopio de la Cruz, a resident of Milan, died of suffocation. It said that a Filipina, Billy Jane Sabio, has been airlifted to a hospital in Genova due to her burn injuries.

It added that 18 more Filipnios suffered from smoke inhalation and brought to separate hospitals in the towns of Savona, Voltri and Pietra Ligure.

The DFA said that based on initial investigation by Italian authorities, the fire on the bus was caused by an electric short circuit.

The DFA said assistance to the victims was underway.
