LAS VEGAS - Filipino boxing superstar Manny Pacquiao wants to travel to Indonesia to visit Filipina drug convict Mary Jane Veloso, whose execution was temporarily delayed at the last minute.
Pacquiao told reporters that he is planning to go to Indonesia as early as Monday (May 4), two days after his fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr.
He is planning to talk to Veloso and Indonesian government officials.
Pacquiao said he will speak to President Aquino about the visit since he intends for it to be an official, state-sanctioned visit where he will make an official appeal.
He also offered prayer messages and support to Veloso and her family.
On early Wednesday morning, the Indonesian attorney general's spokesman said Veloso's execution was delayed at the last minute after one of her recruiters, Maria Kristina Sergio, surrendered to the police.
"The execution of Mary Jane (Veloso) has been postponed because there was a request from the Philippine president related to a perpetrator suspected of human trafficking who surrendered herself in the Philippines," said Tony Spontana, spokesman for the attorney general.
Pacquiao, who is in the United States, earlier made a televised appeal to Indonesian President Joko Widodo.
"I am begging and knocking on your kind heart that your excellency will grant executive clemency to her," he said. - Reports from Steve Angeles and Reuters
