MANILA (UPDATED) - Maria Kristina Sergio, the alleged recruiter of Filipina death convict Mary Jane Veloso, turned herself in on Tuesday despite not having a warrant for her arrest.
DZMM reported Sergio appeared at the Nueva Ecija provincial police office at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday , saying she fears for her life.
Sergio said she heard reports that there were some threats against her life.
This as Veloso faces death by firing squad in Indonesia anytime today.
On Monday, the National Bureau of Investigation-Anti Human Trafficking Division filed a criminal complaint of illegal recruitment, human trafficking and estafa against Veloso, her live-in partner Julius Lacanilao, and an African national "Ike" before the Department of Justice (DOJ).
Lacanilao, who accompanied Sergio, also turned himself in to the police.
Even though there is no warrant of arrest issued against her, Sergio said she wanted to be placed under PNP custody to ensure her safety.
Sergio also appealed for legal assistance to defend herself from the accusations made against her.
Sergio is accused of allegedly recruiting Veloso to go to Malaysia, before giving her a suitcase with drugs to go to Indonesia. Veloso was arrested with 2.6 kilograms of heroin at Yogyakarta airport in April 2010.
In an earlier interview with ABS-CBN, Sergio, a family friend of the Velosos, vehemently denied that she is the reason why Mary Jane is now in death row. She also denied being a member of a drug syndicate and likewise expressed her willingness to be investigated. - Report from Dexter Ganibe, DZMM
