SPAIN - Maunlad Canning Corporation, the manufacturer of Young’s Town sardines and other canned goods, has been the only Philippine company selected to receive this year’s International Food and Beverage Quality Award in Madrid, Spain.
The prestigious award, given by international business group Global Trade Leaders’ Club, aims to recognize businesses worldwide for product excellence and contribution to their respective countries’ development.
Selected businesses in the food industry as well as in hotel and restaurant sector from Sri Lanka, Kenya, Argentina, Mexico, Thailand, Slovakia, Turkey, Taiwan, Malta, among others, were also awarded.
Young’s Town owner Lapaz Ngo, accompanied by her family, attended the awarding ceremony held on January 25 at Hotel Meliá Castilla to personally receive the trophy.
"Dumating ito nang sorpresa at napatunayan natin na kaya nating mga Pilipino na makipagsabayan sa buong mundo," said Ngo.
Ngo was ecstatic upon learning that her company had been nominated. She offers the award to the Filipino consumers, whom she is grateful for, and has promised to offer more quality products.
Her hands-on type of management, Ngo disclosed to ABS-CBNnews.com, is the key ingredient to Young’s Town’s success.
Philippine Consul General to Spain Emmanuel Fernandez, who was invited to hand in the trophy, was equally elated with the Filipino company’s award.
"Isa itong karangalan hindi lang para sa Young's Town kundi para sa buong Pilipinas …they put the Philippines on the map ng international market especially in the area of canned food business," said Fernandez.
According to Global Trade Leaders’ Club, only companies which are recommended by a Club member can be part of the screening process. Once nominated, the company has to undergo a stringent selection process.
"After being recommended, then the company profile will be passed to the selection committee and the profile will be checked and examined to judge whether the company deserves actually to receive the award or not…The award is based on the general quality and the general management and focused on quality and excellence in general, that's the main criteria," explained Mathieu Ledan, International Relations Manager at Global Trade Leaders’ Club.
The Global Trade Leaders’ Club is composed of more than 7,500 members from 95 countries with the primary objective of promoting trade and professional relations among businesses from all over the world.
