Malolos: Sublime in time

The province of Bulacan recently launched a campaign to make the province’s historic-cultural heritage as its centerpiece tourism draw. Malolos, Bulacan is known as the venue of the first Malolos Congress; this is where the first democracy in Asia was born. It was at Barasoain Church that the first Constitution, the basic law of the first Republic, was enacted on January 21, 1898.

Apart from the Barasoain Church, however, one can now get a feel of what the province looked like during the time of the Spanish colonization. Barangay Sto. Nino in Bulacan is one such place. The community around the Basilica Minore of Our Lady of Immaculate Concepcion has retained its old turn-of-the-century houses properly marked and cleaned.

Some properties have been demolished while some of the old houses remain but in various stages of disrepair. A few need help in terms of upkeep and maintenance, but all in all, what the province did right is to try to preserve these historical homes so that future generations will have a glimpse of this small community, and its families who played a major role in the infancy of the first Philippine Republic in Asia.
