Thousands of Catholic devotees did not mind the long queue-- which took more than three hours--for the rare chance to touch Padre Pio’s “incorrupt” heart relic at the Manila Cathedral. The Manila leg started on Tuesday morning and ended on Thursday morning with a farewell Mass before the relic was brought to Cebu for a 3-day visit.

It is a first for Padre Pio’s heart relic to be brought from Italy to the Philippines, where devotion to the Capuchin priest has grown. Stories of faith, hope and thanksgiving were shared by devotees for intentions granted through Padre Pio of Pietrelcina as they patiently waited for their chance to see and touch the relic.

Msgr. Jose Clemente Ignacio, Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Manila, in his homily, reminded the devotes to take comfort from Christ’s words “Ask and it will be given you, seek and you will find, knock and it will be opened to you,” despite the difficulties and challenges they may face. He reminded them to always find hope, strength and healing through faith in Christ.

After Cebu, the relic of Padre Pio will be in Davao on October 14-16. It will be brought back to the National Shrine of Padre Pio in Sto. Tomas, Batangas on October 18-26.

Here are some scenes of the last night of the veneration and the farewell Mass on Thursday morning.
