The past year has been something of a wild rollercoaster ride. The passing of some of our beloved local showbiz and Hollywood icons broke our hearts, while teleseryes, reality shows, and talent contests did their best to piece it back together and simply lift our spirits up. Add to that a confusing elections and a whirlwind first few months under a new leader, and 2016 felt a little too much.

But amid all of that, the everyday, real-life human drama between celebrities continued to intrigue Filipinos. Weddings and breakups are still some of the most read entertainment stories of news.abs-cbn.com, alongside familial spats, dating rumors, and pregnancy gossip.

1. Say it ain't so: Fan favorite couple break up?

The seemingly destined romance between Melai Cantiveros and Jason Francisco, who first met by chance inside the "Pinoy Big Brother" house, came to a screeching halt last July, and was the year's most-read entertainment story. The pair's three-year marriage was put on hold after Francisco admitted to being jealous over Cantiveros' leading man for an afternoon soap.

But the two eventually ironed out their spat, got back together, and ended any lingering doubts about their relationship by announcing that they are expecting their second child.

2. Tears shed for different reasons

Annabelle Rama, a talent manager known for her feistiness, surprised many when she gave in to her motherly instincts, and broke down over the near-death experience of her only daughter, television host Ruffa Gutierrez. Rama was in tears in front of reporters at a press conference for her family's reality show, "It Takes Gutz To Be A Gutierrez."

Meanwhile, former SexBomb Girls member Sugar Mercado also found herself in tears as she reacted to the arrest warrant issued in connection with a child abuse case lodged against her and her mother by her former husband, Kristoffer Jay Go. She earlier claimed that she has been receiving "physical, emotional, and economical abuse" from her husband since 2010, and has gotten the backing of various women's rights groups.

4. Starting to be more open: Sarah and Mateo's blossoming romance

For the past year, famously private couple Sarah Geronimo and Matteo Guidicelli have become more open about their relationship. But with their newfound openness came the many intrigues, with the notable one of 2016 being the rumors about Geronimo's supposed pregnancy. It first gained headwind after the singer decided to take a break from the limelight due to health reasons. The pair has since vehemently denied this, moved on, and celebrated their third anniversary together last October.

5. Angelica turns emotional after breakup with John Lloyd

It took a while before Angelica Panganiban decided to open up about her breakup with John Lloyd Cruz, her boyfriend for more than three years. But when she did, the actress just could not hold back her tears. A devastated Panganiban admitted that she considered the weeks after her split with the actor as one of the "lowest points" of her life.

But it seems the old adage that times heals all wounds holds true for the pair as nowadays, rumors are rife about the possibility of them getting back together. This, despite Cruz being romantically linked with former "One More Chance" co-star Maja Salvador, whom he was spotted enjoying a vacation with in Davao.

7. Luis and Angel and Jessy

The past year should have been a banner one for Jessy Mendiola. She was, after all, hailed as the "sexiest" woman in the country. But it was marred by body-shaming comments from her critics, and her alleged involvement in the split of Luis Manzano and Angel Locsin.

And while Manzano may have already denied the rumor, it did not help that the television host has yet to reveal the reason behind his split with Locsin. Add to that his recent admission that he loves Mendiola and one would no longer need to wonder why the three are among the most-read stories for the past year.

Ex-matinee idol Mark Anthony Fernandez is just one of the high-profile arrests made amid the government’s intensified crackdown against illegal drugs. Detained in Pampanga, the former “Gwapings” star, who voluntarily entered a drug rehabilitation center in 2004 before making a showbiz comeback six months later, gave conflicting statements regarding the marijuana found in his car. He first said that he bought it for P15,000, but backtracked and later claimed that it was planted. He has admitted to using illegal substance, allegedly "to prevent cancer."

11. Weddings, weddings, weddings

But if there were dozens of breakups and splits, there were also a handful of celebrities who tied the knot this year, aside from Kaye Abad's aforementioned wedding with Paul Jake Castillo. Isabelle Daza and her friends Georgina Wilson and Solenn Heussaff all married their respective partners. Add Vic Sotto and Pauleen Luna, as well as Cristine Reyes and Ali Khatibi then you have a 2016 that’s not all doom and gloom when it came to love.
