Partial justice after 40 years: 11,000 martial law victims get reparations 1

The Human Rights Victims' Claims Board handed out earlier this year reparations to victims of the late strongman Ferdinand Marcos' martial rule.

This came more than four decades after the declaration of martial law in September 1972, a period that saw human rights violations such as extra-judicial killings, illegal detentions, enforced disappearances, and other forms of abuse on those opposed to the Marcos regime.

Through Republic Act 10368 or the “Human Rights Victims Reparation and Recognition Act of 2013” signed into law by then President Benigno Aquino III, the Philippine government recognized the bravery and sacrifice of Filipinos whose rights were violated during the martial law era.
