Beginning on Christmas day, December 25, balikbayan boxes worth up to P150,000 will be exempted from taxes, according to the Bureau of Customs.

The ruling covers balikbayan boxes that contain personal and household items only.

BOC Commissioner Nicanor Faeldon explained that balikbayan boxes containing more than 12 items of similar kind should be justified since these may be used for commercial purposes.

“This amount and anticipation of everything is beyond the normal practice of OFWS,” he said, noting that the purpose of the ruling is to help overseas Filipino workers in bringing home their “pasalubong.”

Faeldon joins “[email protected]” on Friday to explain the provisions of the tax exemption for balikbayan boxes.
