MANILA -- Today's 7.2 quake that hit Visayas and parts of Mindanao is one of the strongest to ever hit the country.
But it still pales in comparison to some of the most powerful tremors in Philippine history.
The strongest quake in the Philippines was recorded in July 1990 when a 7.9 earthquake hit Luzon.
It killed some 1,600 people, and devastated Baguio City and nearby provinces.
A similar 7.9 magnitude quake struck in August 1976.
It occurred in Mindanao, spawning a tsunami that devastated more than 700 kilometers of coastline bordering the Moro Gulf.
In August 1968, an earthquake with magnitude 7.3 rocked the town of Casiguran, Aurora.
A total of 270 persons were killed and 261 were injured as a result of the quake.
