DAVAO CITY - Will bachelor President Benigno Aquino III ever be a groom and not just a best man at a wedding?
Aquino just smiled and tried to give an answer in jest when the issue came up on Monday.
“Alam mo may mga bagay na hindi na binibilang e. Baka… Natapos na ako doon sa pagtatanong na 'ito na lang ba ang papel ko dito lagi?" was Aquino's response when asked if he can recall the number of occasions that he has been invited as best man in a wedding.
Shortly before ending his press briefing here, Aquino was asked about Senator Francis “Chiz” Escudero's invitation for him to be the best man in the senator's wedding with actress Heart Evangelista in February 2015.
According to the president, he and Escudero have been good friends since they became colleagues in the House of Representatives in 1998.
He said Escudero wanted him to stand as “ninong (godfather),” but to his relief, Aquino said the couple decided in the end that he will be the best man.
"Siyempre, I'm honored, but also I'm relieved that I wasn't made ninong, 'di ba? And he probably would have suggested the same, but I did mention, sabi ko: 'Hope springs eternal," said Aquino.
He said there's a belief that single people who become godparents will remain single for the rest of their lives.
The bachelor president said: "I said that I was even willing to become a secondary sponsor. Pero 'yung pinaka-appropriate yata sa akin, because I never did it, ring bearer."
ANOTHER WEDDING COMING
The President also confirmed he was invited by celebrity couple Dingdong Dantes and Marian Rivera to their wedding, which was briefly discussed when the actor took his oath as Commissioner-at-large of the National Youth Commission.
"During his oath-taking, he said, 'Sir, we will invite you.' So I said 'yes.' Hindi ko alam kung may role ako doon maliban sa guest. But they have been very supportive - both of them – and they really seem to be happy. So I really hope that it continues for the rest of their lives," he said.
Aquino was also asked when his wedding will take place. With a smile and a glance to his right, looking at Undersecretary Rey Marfil of the Presidential Communications Operations Office, Aquino said: "Ah, sabi nga ni Rey Marfil, soon. It's sooner tomorrow than yesterday.”
