'Si Rudy, kill all criminals, baka walang matirang public official,' quips former senator
MANILA - Will former Senator Renato Saguisag vote for Vice-President Jejomar Binay when he runs for president in 2016?
It depends, quipped the former senator, saying his choice will be easy if Binay is pitted against Sen. Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jnr or even Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte.
"I will wait until the end of the year or beginning next year who will remain standing, so to speak. In other words, theoretically, if it's Jojo vs. Bongbong [Marcos] or Rudy Duterte, eh kami sa human rights community, dito na sa nakasa namin dahil lahi ng mandarambong itong sina Bongbong!" he said in an interview on ANC's Talkback with Tina Palma.
Asked why he won't vote for Duterte, Saguisag said: "Ito namang si Rudy, kill all criminals! Baka walang matirang public official tayo!"
Saguisag and Binay are both members of the Mabini group of human rights lawyers and fought the dictatorship during the martial law years.
Despite the connection, Saguisag admitted he did not vote for Binay in the 2010 vice-presidential election.
He said his vote went to Liberal Party candidate Mar Roxas for one simple reason: because of his deep respect for Roxas' father, the late senator Gerry Roxas.
He recalled that when Binay won the 2010 elections, members of the Mabini group got together to celebrate the victory.
During the celebration, someone asked: "Sino sa inyo ang hindi bumoto kay Jojo? (Who among you did not vote for Jojo?)"
"Dalawa lang kami nagtaas ng kamay ni Bobby Tañada. Yung iba, puro sipsip eh kaya taas ang kamay. In other words, yun talaga, yun naman, my vote for Mar was in tribute to Gerry, the father. A most decent individual. Kaya sa 2016, kung nandito pa kami kasi kahit masamang damo may katapusan din, eh depende kung sinong kalaban niya. Kung si Bongbong o si Rudy Duterte, eh Binay kami sa human rights community. Pero kung may iba diyang magandang lalaki, magandang babae, aba 'di mag-iisip-isip tayo!" he said.
Asked if he has advised Binay not to run in 2016, he said: "Eh hindi naman kami tinatanong eh."
Saguisag said he will not join the political bandwagon and heap more abuse against Binay for the simple fact that they have a history fighting the dictatorship.
"Kung kapatid mo yan, you don't join those dumping [allegations] on him eh. Maaaring hindi mo suportahan, pero hindi ka naman sisipa rin sa kapatid. I mean, from a human standpoint... we were in the same foxholes together. Pinagbababaril kami, pinagkukukulong kami, sinasalvage kami so hindi madaling talikuran ang kapatid," he said.
Saguisag said he and fellow human rights lawyer Joker Arroyo showed up during a Senate Blue Ribbon subcommittee hearing to make sure that the human and constitutional rights of Makati Mayor Junjun Binay would be respected.
He said Arroyo, a former Blue Ribbon Committee chairman, knows that resource persons summoned to a Senate hearing are entitled to an advanced list of questions that would be asked.
Saguisag said he knows nothing about the corruption and money laundering allegations against Binay.
"About the cases, we know nothing. Hindi kami kinokonsulta eh, hindi namin alam eh. Kaya yun nga, everybody's dumping on him, eh kami namang dating magkakasama sa -- kasi talagang bullets razing through our ears -- eh si Jojo, labas-pasok din sa kulungan din yan. Kaya yan ang dilemma namin," he said.
