How do we select claims to fact check?
We fact check statements of fact and not opinions.
We look for its virality and impact, claims that have potential harm to other people’s lives.
Is the claim feasible to fact check?
Our process:
Step 1:
Select materials, from newscasts, online publications, speech of politicians, campaign websites, press releases, viral posts on social media and chat groups.
Step 2:
Researcher/s will verify if the claim was indeed made and the exact claim. They will determine if there are official and reliable records to support or counter it. They will look for multiple sources, interview the people involved to get firsthand information.
Step 3:
After the thorough research about the claim, we will select the rating for the fact-check.
Step 4:
Article writing. We will check the context. Is it accurate? Is the writing clear? The article and text for the art cards will then be edited and proofread.
Step 5:
The fact check will be passed on to the multimedia team. Additional vetting will be done: are the visuals and text appropriate? Final editing and revision of art cards will be done.
Step 6:
The finished fact-check will be reviewed by peers. Check if the visuals are clear and won’t be misinterpreted.
