Methodology
  • The ABS-CBN Fact check aims to counter misinformation and disinformation. Our fact checking initiative follows this rating system:
    • ACCURATE: The statement/claim is demonstrably factual and true.
    • FALSE: The statement/claim is demonstrably contrary to available facts
    • MISLEADING: The statement/claim gives a vague or different impression.
    • NO BASIS: The statement/claim cannot be verified, or fact checked.
    • NEEDS CONTEXT: The statement/claim needs more facts or clarification because it may be taken out of context.

  • What do we Fact Check?
    • ABS-CBN Fact check covers not only mis- and disinformation about politics but also other topics that concern public interest.
      • Politics/ Elections: We closely monitor factual accuracy of what is said by the President and Vice President, Senators, Congressmen, Top Key officials, Local officials, candidates, and public figures.
      • Current Events: Monitoring of false information regarding Covid-19 Pandemic, government announcements, the elections, natural disasters and news about celebrities or influencers.
      • Viral Posts from social media: Posts from different social media platforms like Facebook, Tiktok, YouTube, Twitter, Instagram, Community groups like Viber, Telegram, Discord, Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp and fake websites.

  • How do we select claims to fact check?
    • We fact check statements of fact and not opinions.
    • We look for its virality and impact, claims that have potential harm to other people’s lives.
    • Is the claim feasible to fact check?

  • Our process:
    • Step 1: Select materials, from newscasts, online publications, speech of politicians, campaign websites, press releases, viral posts on social media and chat groups.
    • Step 2: Researcher/s will verify if the claim was indeed made and the exact claim. They will determine if there are official and reliable records to support or counter it. They will look for multiple sources, interview the people involved to get firsthand information.
    • Step 3: After the thorough research about the claim, we will select the rating for the fact-check.
    • Step 4: Article writing. We will check the context. Is it accurate? Is the writing clear? The article and text for the art cards will then be edited and proofread.
    • Step 5: The fact check will be passed on to the multimedia team. Additional vetting will be done: are the visuals and text appropriate? Final editing and revision of art cards will be done.
    • Step 6: The finished fact-check will be reviewed by peers. Check if the visuals are clear and won’t be misinterpreted.
    • Step 7: Publication/airing/ push to social media.
