This year's list may have been dotted with sudden, unexpected deaths, but there was also no shortage of genuine, joyous moments that even the hardest of hearts would find difficult to dampen.

No doubt plenty had a hard time resisting a smile as Anne Curtis finally decided to tie the knot, or when Luis Manzano and Jessy Mendiola gushed about each other for their first anniversary as a couple.

Also included were ruminations about how a popular "sexiest" poll should have went or who was more worthy to take on the Darna role, alongside hopeful chatter about showbiz's future as fan-favorites walked the red carpet of the glamorous Star Magic Ball for the first time.

Here are 2017's most read entertainment stories on ABS-CBN News Online:

Nadine Lustre tops FHM's '100 Sexiest' poll

When a beaming Nadine Lustre walked away with the title of the country’s “sexiest woman” in the annual FHM poll, haters insisted that this must surely have been a fluke, or that the results were skewed, thanks to her massive fanbase. But after proving time and time again that being “sexy” is not just limited to looks, and that confidence can be just as attractive as a Coke-bottle body, this definitely won't be the last time the magazine recognizes the actress.

Star Magic Ball 2017

The annual gathering of country’s brightest stars happened last September, mixing a plethora of showbiz newcomers with industry icons such as Claudine Barretto, Heart Evangelista and Kristine Hermosa. The event not only painted a vibrant picture of local showbiz’s future, it also honored figureheads that have been steering it towards dazzling heights such as Star Creatives’ chief operating officer Malou Santos and Johnny “Mr. M” Manahan.

Apart from all the glitz and glamour, it also proved to be a night for charity as Piolo Pascual led the donation of a total of P1 million to the Bantay Bata Foundation, which was celebrating its 20th anniversary.

Hashtags’ Franco Hernandez dies in a drowning incident

In November, the “It’s Showtime” family mourned the death of a member of its dance group, Hashtags. At just 26, Franco Hernandez, often described by his friends as a heartthrob who has a kind soul and amazing talent for dancing, was added to the list of local celebrities who passed away too young. He died in a drowning incident while he was on vacation in Davao Occidental with his girlfriend and fellow Hashtags member, Tom Doromal.

Randy Santiago’s son succumbs to rare disease

Sharon Cuneta was one of those profoundly affected by the death of Randy Santiago’s son, Ryan, who died from complications arising from multiple sclerosis — a neurological disease for which there is currently no cure. He has been described as a boy with a “beautiful smile,” and Cuneta just couldn’t help but point out that he was only 24 when he passed away.

Santiago himself was at a loss for words in describing the pain of losing a child, saying: "Baka may purpose [ang Panginoon] kung bakit he had to leave and he had to go at an early age.” Admitting that it would be cruel to have Ryan suffer from his disease, he added: “Dahil siyempre hindi naman siguro patagalin pa 'yung sickness niya.”

Anne Curtis finally marries

Anne Curtis’ union with restaurateur Erwan Heussaff was probably one of the most anticipated weddings of 2017. Months before they tied the knot, the two kept their wedding date in wraps, with reports suggesting that it was scheduled for November 11. As it turned out, they exchanged wedding vows a day later in a picturesque, intimate ceremony in New Zealand. It was attended only by the couple’s family and closest friends. The "It's Showtime" host and her chef beau, who began dating in 2011, exchanged vows less than a year after getting engaged in New York in December 2016.

Isabel Granada’s death shocks many

No celebrity death in 2017 captured the unpredictability of life more than Isabel Granada’s back in November. Described to have been perfectly fit and healthy, she suddenly fell into a coma during a meet-and-greet session with fans in Doha. She was said to have suffered brain hemorrhage indicating aneurysm, which in turn affected her heart.

Her husband, Arnel Cowley, said that there were very little signs that he would lose his wife. He also posted a heartbreaking letter to Granada, sharing how she helped him survive his cancer. “How I really do wish that is should have been me,” he wrote.

Following her death, Granada, who first shot to fame as a child and teen star in 1980s in “That’s Entertainment,” was awarded a star at the Eastwood Walk of Fame.

Erich, Daniel keep fans guessing over sudden split

Troubles surrounding the relationship of Erich Gonzales and Daniel Matsunaga surfaced late January after eagle-eyed fans noticed that the actress removed their photos from her Instagram account. A week later, Matsunaga admitted that they were "going through some personal things” — a claim Gonzales smashed when she finally opened up about it, saying that they’re no longer together. She, however, reiterated that there was no third party involved.

Nonetheless, their breakup hogged headlines for weeks as Gonzales refused to confirm nor deny speculations that finances had something to do with their split.

Liza Soberano inherits the mantle of Darna

Liza Soberano is this generation's Darna. Last May, the guessing game ended after the young actress confirmed that she has accepted the iconic role for an upcoming movie. Soberano, who's known for her roles in "Dolce Amore" and "Forevermore" with love team partner Enrique Gil, succeeds Marian Rivera, who was the last to portray the Mars Ravelo character onscreen. Angel Locsin, who played Darna in 2005, was first tapped by Erik Matti to star in his film but a back injury forced the actress out of the project.

A banner year for Jessy, Luis

Few would have imagined Jessy Mendiola and Luis Manzano being among the most hotly followed celebrity couples after the messy start of their relationship, riddled with harsh criticisms and senseless bashing. That they have been talking about marriage now shows how much the two love each other.

Mendiola said that she found it easier to be at “peace" nowadays, while Manzano gushed that his girlfriend is “the one that ties everything” in his life together.

Wil Dasovich reveals he has cancer

In August, travel blogger and former "Pinoy Big Brother" housemate Wil Dasovich caught everyone off guard when he released his "most important vlog,” in which he confirmed that he has stage three colon cancer. Since then, Dasovich has been staying in the United States, where he is undergoing a series of medical checkups and chemotherapy.

Hours after the news of his cancer broke, Dasovich's name became one of the most talked about topics on social media, with netizens and his celebrity friends alike sending him messages of support. As of writing, Dasovich is almost done with all the cycles of his chemotherapy.
