“The Boy and the Heron” is a meditation on grief from Academy Award winner Hayao Miyazaki. Handout

The Japanese fantasy film "The Boy and the Heron" on Sunday won the Oscar for best animated feature film, beating the likes of "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse."

Animation master Hayao Miyazaki's film -- a meditation on love, loss and the horrors of World War II, and potentially his last movie -- also beat Disney's "Elemental," Netflix's "Nimona" and the dialogue-free "Robot Dreams" to win the award.
