MANILA – Juan Karlos Labajo admitted that he considered his friend, Darren Espanto, as the strongest contender among the four finalists of “The Voice Kids.”
Speaking to “The Bottomline” host Boy Abunda in an interview aired on Saturday, Labajo said he noticed how people were in awe of Espanto’s performances every time he sings.
“Actually si Darren po talaga kasi bumibirit siya tapos yung mga bumibirit, nakaka[kuha ng attention] ng audience. Parang ‘Wow!’ Naisip ko din po nung time na yun na Darren will win so parang I must do my best,” he said.
Labajo, however, shared one tip given to him by his coach, Bamboo Manalac, which strengthened his belief that he also has a fighting chance.
“[Sabi ni coach Bamboo] just be yourself. Kung lahat bumibirit, huwag ka bumirit,” he said.
When the finale came, Labajo said his coach reminded him to do what is in his heart and trust that everything that would happen next has a purpose.
“[Nung finale, naisip ko na] everybody will always think to win. Pero nabanggit na rin po ni coach na ‘If you are not going to win this competition, don’t worry because God has a reason why hindi ka nanalo.’ Totoo po yung sinabi ni coach, ngayon ang daming blessing po talaga ni Lord,” he said.
In the end, it was Lyca Gairanod who won the first season of “The Voice Kids.”
Months after the competition, Labajo said he is grateful for all the opportunities coming his way.
“In all guestings, mall tours, concerts, enjoy lang po kami. We just enjoy the show. We think na para lang siyang game ng mga friends. Kami po, I know that we are all doing our best,” he said.
Since “The Voice Kids,” Labajo has gone to a number of mall shows and tours and has been appearing on various Kapamilya shows. He, along with Espanto, Gairanod and Darlene Vibares, are also set to headline their first major concert this month.
