MANILA — “Sa tingin niyo ba ginusto ko ‘to? Tapos sasabihin niyo, gawa-gawa lang ‘yung sakit na ‘to.”
These were the words of Julia Barretto’s character in an upcoming episode of “Maalaala Mo Kaya” (MMK), which centers on a student who navigates her daily life while dealing with bipolar disorder.
The emotional scene was shown in a teaser for the November 30 offering, which has already earned nearly a million views since it was released last Saturday.
The teaser also sees Barretto’s character being diagnosed with the condition, and having strained relationships as she struggles to cope with her manic and depressive episodes.
Viewers’ comments on the teaser ranged from praise for Barretto’s acting and the depiction of mental health, to those saying they could relate to certain scenes, having been diagnosed with the bipolar disorder themselves.
“This should be watched by many to open up their minds about mental health. I was clinically diagnosed with mental illnesses as well and my family never believed me at gawa gawa ko lang daw. I can relate to the Julia’s character so much. It’s hard. Mental health is important,” one YouTube comment read.
Another wrote on Facebook: “Sana mapanood ito ng mga taong mapanghusga agad na napaka drama daw ng mga may ganitong klaseng sakit. Baka sakaling maintindihan niyo kahit hindi ninyo napagdadaanan.”
“MMK,” the longest running drama anthology in Asia, depicts real-life stories as shared by letter senders.
The upcoming Saturday episode marks Barretto’s comeback in “MMK” after two years. She last appeared in the ABS-CBN program in 2017, with her erstwhile leading man Joshua Garcia.
