MANILA - Former Rivermaya frontman Jason Fernandez earned a spot at Team Apl with his rendition of an Eraserheads hit during the Blind Auditions of "The Voice of the Philippines" that aired Sunday night.

The 25-year-old rocker started his musical career with Rivermaya, whose original vocalist, Bamboo Mañalac, is now a coach on "The Voice."

However, it was Coach Apl.de.ap, and not Bamboo, who turned his chair for Fernandez, who performed "Ang Huling El Bimbo."

Bamboo, who appeared surprised upon seeing Fernandez, complemented the contestant, saying he performed the classic tune the way it's supposed to be sang.

Pero ako ang hinahanap ko is how you define yourself from the rest. And I want you to do that, man. I'm rooting for you," Bamboo said.

Meanwhile, apl.de.ap thought that while Fernandez's performance was not "extravagant," it already gave him ideas on what they can do during the Battle Rounds.

"Sometimes you don't have to do something extravagant to impress someone. Kasi I felt your voice, I felt your emotions and it gave me lot of ideas," Coach Apl said.

Fernandez, who is now married with a kid, said his inspiration in joining "The Voice" is his family.

"Noong nagkaanak ako, nagbago ang pag-iisip ko. Naging mas responsableng tao ako. Mas mahalaga sa akin ngayon kung bakit ako musikero," he said.
