MANILA -- Popularized by no less than music icon Regine Velasquez, “Dadalhin” has been an oft-performed and all too familiar piece in singing competitions — but there has been nothing quite like this version from Rachel Gabreza.
The Tawag ng Tanghalan star was among the former finalists who returned to the “It’s Showtime” segment for its ongoing Grand Resbak edition, where three teams compete with a member from each eliminated daily.
Gabreza performed “Dadalhin” last Saturday in a bid to stay on in the all-star competition. She managed just that, as she had the judges visibly impressed with her fresh take on the Tats Faustino composition.
The explosive arrangement departed from the established Velasquez version in the latter half, with vocal acrobatics and an unexpected key change in the final line.
“Taray ng version, ibang-iba!” host Vice Ganda said after the performance. “Parang puwede mo nang gawing single ‘yan, girl! I-record mo na ‘yan!”
Judge Nyoy Volante told Gabreza: “Pinatunayan mo why you’re a force to be reckoned with, kung bakit ka talaga katatakutan.”
“Na-highlight mo ‘yung skill, ‘yung variety ng style, ng dynamics. Ang komplikado ng mga pinaggagawa mo, which personally I appreciated. Hindi lang siya basta komplikado, naitawid mo siya, na-execute mo siya nang maayos,” he added.
Viewers were similarly impressed, going by reactions online.
The performance, which secured Gabreza another day in Grand Resbak thereby sparing her team from elimination, went viral over the weekend.
On Twitter, an upload of the song climax had some 8,000 retweets and nearly 40,000 reactions as of writing. Across platforms, the official video has garnered over a million views.
