MANILA — Regine Velasquez is ecstatic over the engagement of her “anak-anakan” Sarah Geronimo with Matteo Guidicelli, calling the milestone “wonderful” after the highs and lows the relationship has gone through.
Velasquez, whom Geronimo credits as her singing idol, is known to be a close friend of the pop superstar. They have formed a close relationship since Geronimo won the 2003 singing contest “Star for a Night,” which Velasquez hosted.
Velasquez was asked for her reaction to the news of Geronimo’s engagement Thursday, during the red-carpet opening of the 2019 Cinema One Originals film festival, where her comeback film, “Yours Truly, Shirley,” is participating.
Guidicelli posted about the engagement around the same time as the Cinema One event. One reporter showed Guidicelli’s Instagram post as Velasquez entertained questions on the red carpet.
“I’m happy! Whenever you hear a friend getting engaged, it’s always a celebration. You cannot help but feel excited for them. Kasi pinagdaanan ko na ‘yun, na-engage na ako. Ang sarap talaga ng feeling, e,” said Velasquez, who is married to fellow singer Ogie Alcasid.
“Tapos lalagay na sila sa tahimik. It’s wonderful!” she added.
Asked for her well-wishes for Geronimo, in light of the upcoming nuptials, Velasquez said: “I’m happy for her. I only wish the best for their relationship. They’ve been together for five, six years. I’m so happy.”
Guidicelli, 29, and Geronimo, 31, first confirmed their relationship in 2014, after nearly a year of being officially together. They reportedly celebrated their sixth anniversary as a couple in September 2019.
“Alam mo, ang dami nang pinagdaanan ng relasyon na ‘yan,” Velasquez said. “Feeling ko, parang, walang nang makakapigil talaga. Ito na ‘yan! Parang hindi nila papayagan na may mangyari pa sa relasyon nila after what they’ve gone through.”
While they’re among the most visible stars in showbiz, Geronimo and Guidicelli have largely kept their relationship low profile. Geronimo doesn’t appear to have an active, personal presence on social media, while Guidicelli rarely shares photos of him with the singer.
Asked whether she thinks she will be tapped as a “ninang,” or a principal sponsor at the wedding, Velasquez quipped, “Naman!”
