MANILA - It is a dream come true for Karla Estrada.
The former actress braved the stage of "The Voice of the Philippines" on an episode of the singing competition aired Saturday, and performed her cover of the 1992 hit "What's Up," originally sung by 4 Non Blondes.
"I started as a singer bago ako naging artista. Back in Tacloban, I was 9 years old. Alam ko na marunong talaga ako kumanta at sumali na ako agad sa mga singing contests," Estrada recalled before her performance.
"Gusto ko talaga, pangarap ko talaga na sumali sa 'The Voice' dahil 'kontesera' ako. Itong competition na ito, ito na 'yung height ng singing contests for me na kailangan kong matupad na salihan," she added.
Estrada, the mother of teen star Daniel Padilla, had the crowd at the audition applauding every time she hits a high note. At one point, she even had one of the coaches -- Sarah Geronimo -- singing along.
But it wasn't meant to be.
"That was good. Sa diction, wala naman problema. But I guess we're looking for something na hindi namin ma-describe. 'Yung mapapatalon ka talaga at mapapapindot sa button," explained Lea Salonga, one of other coaches, of her decision not to turn for Estrada.
In what was a light moment, shortly before she gave her comment, Salonga, failed to recognized Estrada. She asked: "What's your name?"
Realizing she made a mistake, Salonga rushed towards the singer and gave her a hug. "Your son is adorable," she whispered to Estrada.
For her part, Geronimo commended Estrada for her effort and humility. "What you did was inspiring," she said.
"Yung passion ninyo sa music, hinding hindi mawawala sa iyo. At 'yung humility ninyo para sumali sa competition at maging ready sa kung ano man ang magiging resulta," she added.
The other two coaches -- Bamboo Mañalac and apl.de.ap -- also gave similar comments.
"Everyone said that it is admirable that you are here, thank you very much for joining us, for understanding what this show is all about," said Mañalac.
Estrada, in reply, said: "Lahat naman tayo pantay-pantay tayo sa pangarap."
"No matter who you are, where you are from. Dreams come true. Thank you Lord. I was really waiting for this night. I said no matter what, I just want to experience it and I am so happy," she shared.
