"It comes with a lot of trauma," shared Roxanne Barcelo, as she tried to explain why she was in tears after a performance in the "Tawag ng Tanghalan" stage over the past month.
One of the celebrity contestants, Barcelo initially said that it was because it was her late father's wish for her to sing again.
But given her beautiful voice, why was Barcelo so hesitant to take up the microphone in the first place?
This Tuesday, she told "Tonight With Boy Abunda" that singing for her had sadly been tied to some painful memories.
She recalled how the person who gave her her first record deal --former Universal Records boss Bella Tan-- died right before they released the album, which eventually topped the charts then.
This made her vow to never sing again.
Her dad passing away after telling her to share to the world the songs she written in secret ("Sayang ang mga kanta mo anak.") only reinforced this promise of hers to avoid singing.
Though according to Barcelo, she soon realized that the best way to honor those who believed in her was through the very thing she promised not to do --to perform as a singer and succeed as one.
She said: "Isa lang iyong dasal ko, 'I want to sing a song without shedding a tear because I miss him every day of my life'."
She added that she wants to do it for her mother as well. "I look at my mother every day and I just see iyong nanay ko na nami-miss niya iyong true love niya. ...I want to honor my dad and my mom."
Barcelo was on the late night talk show to promote her new movie, "Love is Love."
