MANILA — Ethel Booba nearly did not push through with her finals bid in Tawag ng Tanghalan after consecutive days of feeling ill and having no voice.

But the comedienne did show up on Wednesday, admittedly with a subpar rendition of “To Love you More” by Celine Dion.

Prior to her performance, Ethel Booba had servings of alcohol, she said, pointing out it usually helps when she has vocal problems.

“Grabe, uminom ako! Kasi sa mga singer ganu’n, eh. Nakakaloka,” she said. “Muntik na ako talaga mag-back out kasi nakakahiya!”

The judges agreed that the practice can be beneficial to some singers, particularly to open up the vocal cords.

While judge Nyoy Volante noticed the “limitations” of Ethel Booba’s performance, he commended her confidence and presence on stage, saying she didn't appear nervous.

“May mga parts talaga na obvious na nahirapan ka to execute. But when the time came that you had to redeem yourself, grabe naman din talaga. ‘Yung birit mo, buong-buo, e. Parang walang sakit. Nakakabilib,” he said.

In jest, Ethel Booba said she was looking forward to becoming a “resbaker,” or a returning contender after being eliminated.

That wasn’t the case, however, as the fan favorite still managed to advance to the finale, after garnering the most number of public votes to be named the “Madlang People’s Choice” for the day.

Fellow celebrity contender Apple Chiu, meanwhile, similarly went through the next round, as she was named “Hurado’s Choice.”

The other finalists who performed on Wednesday were RJ dela Fuente, Jimmy Marquez, Jason Fernandez, and DJ Onse.
