MANILA – Jessy Mendiola is flattered that her name is one of those being floated to replace Angel Locsin in the upcoming Darna movie.
Last week, many were disappointed to learn that Locsin will no longer play the Filipino superhero in an upcoming Star Cinema movie due to a health problem.
In an interview with ABS-CBNnews.com on Wednesday, Mendiola said any actress who is considered for the role will be delighted because Darna is an iconic character.
“I really get flattered. I don’t know. Kinikilig ako every time they put a comment about that. I have a lot of pictures [on Instagram], not only the bikini ones. Kahit quote nga lang 'yung ilagay ko, ganun pa rin ang sinasabi. Nakakatuwa lang na people are really going out of their way just to comment, or just to put something about Darna. Thank you. I’m really flattered,” she said.
However, she clarified that her recent Instagram post where she is showing off her curves in a red bikini has nothing to do with trying to get the Darna role.

“Wala siyang meaning, wala siyang hint, wala siyang para-paramdam, wala. Not at all. I just thought na alangan namang mag-post ako na naka-turtleneck sa beach? It’s just really funny when people put ideas sa mga posts mo. Para sa akin, I went on a vacation in a beach so I think it’s pretty normal to post a picture of wearing a bikini or any beachwear,” she said.
Mendiola’s post has garnered more than 25,000 likes and over 500 comments, with many praising her gorgeous body. Others, meanwhile, pointed out that the actress will be a good replacement for Locsin.
Mendiola, however, has this to say: “It depends on the management kung sinong choice nila. Pero I’m sure naman 'yung mapipili nila, mabibigyan naman ng justice 'yung role.”
Asked how she will prepare for the role in case the ABS-CBN management picks her, Mendiola said: “I think anyone, kahit hindi ako ang mapili, kung gagawin mo ang role na ‘yun, you’re supposed to be ready for all the bashing also and 'yung mga hindi nag-a-agree na you should portray the role. If ever you get chosen also, I think you have to undergo proper training.”
Mendiola said portraying Darna doesn’t have to be filling in somebody’s shoes or imitating what has already been done.
“You also have to prove to them kung bakit ka ba pinili. It’s because you can be your own Darna,” she said. “Ikaw yun eh, ikaw ang napili. It’s up to you on how you will make it different from hers.”
Currently, Mendiola is busy working on her upcoming ABS-CBN series "You're My Home." It will air on ABS-CBN starting November 9 after "On the Wings of Love."
