MANILA -- "Eat Bulaga" host Joey de Leon on Wednesday announced that the long-running noontime show will hold a new contest called "That's My Tambay," amid the success of a similarly named talent showcase for lesbians on the rival program "It's Showtime."
De Leon drew laughs during the live telecast of "Eat Bulaga" on October 30 as he alluded to "That's My Tomboy" in announcing the TAPE program's new segment "para sa mga tambay."
The announcement was carried by the news website of GMA-7, which airs "Eat Bulaga" as a blocktimer.
The Filipino slang "tambay" comes from the English phrase "stand by." It largely refers to those who are unproductive or are unemployed, as de Leon used the term on Wednesday.
"Mga kaibigan, may bago tayong contest. Bibigyan natin ng pansin ang mga tambay -- ang title: 'That's My Tambay,'" he said.
"Tandaan niyo, maraming nag-ga-graduate ng tambay, so 'yun ang bibigyan natin ng pansin, at ang mga premyo nito, matindi. Pabibigyan natin ng trabaho, pag-aaralin natin, o kaya may training, mga kaibigan," de Leon added.
He said the new segment will premiere this week.
In an apparent jab at "That's My Tomboy," the comedian then quipped, "Lalaki lang po [ang contestants], lalaki!"
"Kailangan marunong ka kumanta ng 'Pagdating ng Panahon.' Dahil pagdating ng panahon, magkakatrabaho ka," he said, referring to the massive hit of openly lesbian singer Aiza Seguerra.
One of the segments on "It's Showtime," "That's My Tomboy" features lesbians who look masculine. It includes a question-and-answer portion, as well as a talent showcase.
Since it debuted early this month on the ABS-CBN program, "That's My Tomboy" has consistently figured in the top trending topics on social media platform Twitter. On its first week, the contest topped the list of local and worldwide trends on the micro-blogging site.
The title of the contest is a take on the "That's My Boy," a contest for talented boys aged seven and below on "Eat Bulaga."
Early this year, the TAPE program also launched a "sing-alike" contest called "Ka-Voice," which had contestants dress up as the personalities whose voice they imitated. This followed the massive success of "Kalokalike," a segment on "It's Showtime" for celebrity look-alikes.
