He called it the "darkest" period of his life.
And James Reid opened up on "Tonight With Boy Abunda" about how Nadine Lustre helped him overcome the "height of his depression."
The actor said on Monday's episode of the late night talk show that he was contemplating leaving showbiz because of "people telling [him] how to be and what to do with [his] life."
Reid recalled that it was around that time, right after booking a solo trip to Japan to try and escape all the noise and his problems, that his relationship with Lustre "really started to kick off."
"With her, I didn't have to pretend to be anyone," he said. "I could just be myself completely. She helped me through the darkest time of my life, and I've been there for her for hers."
Lustre has also acknowledged to suffering from depression, and she once talked about how her brother's suicide in 2017 affected her.
Reid and Lustre has been together for more than three years.
According to Reid, who is currently busy managing his own record label Careless Manila, he is probably experiencing the "best" time of his life — "I'm more open now," he said — thanks to Nadine.
