"Thor: Ragnarok" arrives in PH theaters with a thunderous P38.5-million opening day gross. Marvel Studios

The newest "Thor" film is proving to be a worthy inclusion to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, at least for Filipino fans.

The God of Thunder's third outing made P38.5 million in the local box office -- the best opening day gross for any Marvel Studios' offering this year so far, beating "Spider-Man: Homecoming" and "Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2".

It's also the fourth biggest opening of the year overall, behind only "Beauty and the Beast," "Wonder Woman," and "Fast & Furious 8."

Directed by Taika Waititi, "Thor: Ragnarok" has been garnering positive reviews thanks to its hilarious dialogue and splendid, technicolor aesthetics.

In it, Thor (Chris Hemsworth) is imprisoned on the other side of the universe without his mighty hammer and finds himself in a race against time to get back to Asgard to stop Ragnarok—the destruction of his homeworld and the end of Asgardian civilization—at the hands of an all-powerful new threat, the ruthless Hela (Cate Blanchett).

But first he must survive a deadly gladiatorial contest that pits him against his former ally and fellow Avenger—the Incredible Hulk (Mark Ruffalo).
