MANILA – Former “Darna” director Erik Matti previously envisioned Nadine Lustre to be the next Filipina superhero, succeeding Liza Soberano and Angel Locsin.
But in the end, the coveted role was given to young actress Jane de Leon.
While De Leon is not his personal pick, Matti acknowledged that she has what it takes to portray Darna on the big screen.
“I know Jane. Maganda ‘yung choice sa kanya kasi parang girl-next-door. Very fresh,” he told ABS-CBN News on the sidelines of the press conference for the HBO Asia series “Food Lore,” where he is featured as one of the directors.
“I think it’s a good decision for ABS-CBN and Jerrold Tarrog,” he went on, referring to the director who has since picked up the project in 2018 after Matti left due to “creative differences.”
“It’s good that they picked a fresh face talaga. Maganda ‘yun.”
When he got on board with the project in 2016, Matti tapped Locsin to reprise her role as Darna. The actress, who portrayed the Filipina superhero on television back in 2005, eventually backed out due to a back injury.
Soberano succeeded Locsin in 2017, but a finger injury forced her out of the project.
And now that De Leon is the new Darna, Matti only has one tip for her.
“Embrace it. It’s not an easy role, but she needs to embrace it because it’s going to bring her to greater heights as an actress,” the director said.
