MANILA — Matmat Centino, the 2018 runner-up of the TV pageant Miss Q&A, unleashed her “showgirl” side Wednesday as one of the celebrity contenders of Tawag ng Tanghalan, earning a standing ovation from all five judges.
Centino performed the iconic tune “Cabaret,” channeling her idol Liza Minnelli. Midway through the number, she stripped off a puffy dress to reveal a more revealing outfit, to cheers from the audience.
Referring to her song choice, Centino said after her number: “Marami nang kinita ‘yon. Nakapagpatapos iyon ng walong kapatid ko sa kolehiyo. Noong kinakanta ko ‘yon, ang iniisip ko, ito na ‘yung lahat-lahat ng pinagpaguran ko.”
Prior to joining Miss Q&A in 2018, Centino made a name in the transwoman pageant circuit not only as a frequent winner, but as a musical performer.
After giving Centino a standing ovation, head judge Ogie Alcasid agreed with the term used by host Anne Curtis, describing the contender as an “ultimate showgirl.”
“Iyong performance mo, ang pinaka-description ko: kumpleto. Lahat nandoon, e… ‘Yung boses mo, ‘yung projection mo, your choreography. It was such a delightful experience for us to watch. That was almost perfect,” Alcasid told Centino.
Centino’s applauded performance earned the highest score for the day, besting fellow celebrity contenders Maricel Morales, Marilyn Villamayor, and Marc Tupaz.
