MANILA — Gian Magdangal brought his experience from the theater stage to television via Tawag ng Tanghalan on Wednesday, earning a standing ovation from judges of the popular singing competiton.
Magdangal was one of four celebrity contenders who performed as part of the ongoing special edition of “It’s Showtime” segment.
Magdangal, whose most recent stage outing was “Ang Huling El Bimbo,” played to his strength as he took on a song from the movie musical, “The Greatest Showman.”
His rendition of “A Million Dreams” had the judges cheering midway through his number. All five, including head judge Dulce, were on their feet by the final note.
Two of the judges, Karylle and Kyla, happened to be Magdangal’s fellow performers a decade ago in the GMA-7 concert variety show “SOP.”
“Grabe ka,” Dulce told Magdangal. “Si Gian kasi, napaka-gentle na tao, napakabait, tapos pag kumanta siya, naghahalimaw!”
“Masaya lang ako na kumanta ka ngayon. Talagang pinaganda mo ‘yung araw namin. Ang ganda-ganda lang, wala na akong ibang sasabihin,” she added.
Magdangal’s applauded performance earned him the highest score of the day, besting fellow contenders Joed Serrano, Lie Reposposa, and Wilbert Ross.
