MANILA -- The TV remake of "Ang Probinsyano" has proven to be a hit among viewers as it consistently topped the list of the country's most-watched TV shows since it made its debut on September 28.
"Ang Probinsyano" is a 1997 film starring Fernando Poe Jr. in the title role, now being played by Coco Martin in the TV version.

According to Martin, the idea of remaking "Ang Probinsyano" into a drama series was formed during a meeting with ABS-CBN president and CEO Charo Santos-Concio, who wanted a project that will highlight the role of policemen in the society.
Martin had only one name in mind when told of the plan -- FPJ.

But some fans, especially those who saw the original "Ang Probinsyano" movie, could not help but compare the movie and the teleserye, especially when it aired a key scene last October 5.
The particular scene showed Martin's character up against a group of rebels after they refused to return Virgin Mary's golden crown, which they stole from the church.
